England hope Lewis is totesport Player of the Month
GLOUCESTERSHIRE Gladiator Jon Lewis is the totesport League Division One Player of the Month after securing his place in the England one-day squad to face the Aussies following a string of impressive performances for his county. The fast bowler took 11 wickets for Gloucestershire at an average of just 9.9 runs, including a brilliant 5 for 19 against Hampshire on May 2 when he also scored 40 runs with the bat. Totesport Spokesman Damian Walker said: “Jon Lewis had a magnificent May and his performances have rightly attracted the attention of the England selectors.”
Uncapped Lewis has been included in the England squads for the Natwest Series and Natwest International Twenty20 matches against Australia. Lewis beat off some stiff competition from May nominee David Hemp who scored 164 runs in four innings without dismissal for Glamorgan Dragons. Also nominated was Chris Read from Nottingham Outlaws, who averaged 28.2 with the bat as well as taking three catches and one stumping.
Sussex Sharks Matt Prior was named Player of the Month in the totesport League Division Two. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 300 runs at an average of 60 – the highlight being a stunning 144 off 135 balls against the Warwickshire Bears on May 8. Prior also took five catches and a stumping. Walker added: “Matt Prior has been in outsanding form and is certainly pushing for England’s wicketkeeper-batsman position.”
Other May nominees in totesport League Division Two were Somerset Sabres batsman Ian Blackwell who scored 300 runs at average of 75.00 and Craig White of Yorkshire Phoenix who took 13 wickets at an average of 8.84.
